13th International VLSI Conference in Calcutta

The thirteenth International Conference on VLSI Design will be held at Calcutta, during 3-7th 2000. The beginning of the next millennium, in Calcutta will witness the participation of galaxy of scientists and industry representatives from all over the world to discuss various aspects of VLSI design. The theme of this conference is "Wireless & Digital Imagine in the Millennium". The fire-day programme will have Technical sessions for paper presentation, Special sessions, Tutorials, Panel discussion and industrial exhibits. The topics of interest will include along with VLSI in Wireless communication, digital imaging, DSP design, ASIC design, high-level synthesis, logic synthesis, all aspects of test and DFT, hardware/software co-design low-power design, physical design, mixed signal design, performance-driven design, core based systems, programmable devices, issues in deep-submission VLSI, processor design, stimulation, standards, electronic design automation tools, concurrent engineering. This conference is held in co-operation with IEEE and ACM and the proceedings are printed by IEEE computer Society Press.

The thirteenth conference will have a special feature - Industry forum - to provide a platform for exchange of ideas between the leaders in this field - the MNCs and Indian counterparts. The discussion in this Forum will hopefully come out with possibilities of setting up new industries in the state of West Bengal adding another feather to the process of industrial rejuvenation of the state.

Intel Corporation has already confirmed their participation as sponsor and holding many key responsibilities. Other stalwarts, eg Nortel Corporation, Texas Instruments, Cadence Design System, Mintor Graphics Corporation, VC Berkeley, IMEC - Belgium are also expected to join the conference.

West Bengal Government has also taken keen interest in holding such an international event in Calcutta. Chief Minister Shri Jyoti Basu is informed and the conference will likely to be inaugurated by him. An initial level of discussion was also held with Dr. S.K. Sen, Power and Science and Technology minister of West Bengal.

The preparatory activities are running in full swing. ISI, IIT, BE College (DU), JU, CMC and many others were included in the committee. The conference is expected to explore research opportunities, human resource and infrastructure, with the objective of expansion of VLSI industries in India and in West Bengal, in particular.
