NEWS FEATURE Education BJP style : Saffronisation of Books - II
An Online Collage Some more efforts to Communalise: A number of pages have been devoted in various school textbooks of history to Dr. Hedgewar, the founder of the RSS. He has been placed among the greatest leaders of our freedom movement! In revising the chapter on Asoka (in Bhagi) three lines have been interpolated which reflect utter disregard for facts. These lines are: It is worth mentioning that in spite of such a large empire, Asoka had got his edicts engraved only in one script (Brahri) (sic) and one language (Pakti-Sanskrit) (sic). This symbolises the national unity of that time." Those who have inserted these lines are either ignorant of or are distorting the fact that Asoka got his edicts inscribed in Kharosthi, Aramaic and Greek too. Had they mentioned this fact, they would have been forced to damn him as unpatriotic! In the chapter on "Culture and Civilisation of the Mughal Period", following statement has been, added. Babars local governor Mir Baqi (sic) got a mosque built at the demolished site of a temple in Ayodhya. Although this structure is disputed, even then Hindu people regard it as temple. (Bhag II, page 146). The paragraph which dealt with Baburs liberal policy in the last edition has been now deleted. The freedom struggle, as has already been mentioned, now includes Dr. Kesbavrao Hedgewar as one of the tallest leaders. The role of the RSS has been glorified and statements of a number of national leaders have been quoted in praise of the RSS. (Bhag III pp 316-319). It has been announced that complete revision was not possible because of the lack of time. This task of through revision will be accomplished in the next edition. To guide in this matter an organisation-Bharaitya Itihas Sankalan Samiti-has been formed. It has been entrusted with the job of collecting, compiling and publishing "relevant" materials on Indian history and culture. The textbooks currently in use at the primary level in Saraswati Shishu Mandirs, run by the RSS, though founded by the Government to a large extent introduce rabid communal viewpoints. Gaurav Gatha, the textbook for class IV is written in a highly emotive and provocative language. It depicts the entire Indian history as the struggle for freedom beginning with the resistance to Alexanders invasion. The second phase of the freedom struggle, according to this textbook, began with the invasion of India by Mahmud of Ghanji. Here the book bids a goodbye to facts and becomes xenophobic in one. The book claimes that Mohammad Gohri was killed by Prithviraj, Qutub Minar was constructed by Samudragupta and its original home was Vishnu Stham bha, the foreign ruler Mohammad Tughlaq transferred his capital from Delhi to Deogiri in South India out of fears of the Hindu kings. The entire period of Sultanat and the Mughal rule has been depicted as rule by foreigners against which Indian people (Hindus) continued to fight. Rana Protaps never forgot that Akbar was a foreigner and fought valiantly to end the foreign rule on the soil of India. Rana Pratap told his people that "His (Akbars) tongue may be sweet but he was still a foreigner". It glorifies the pillage by the Marathas and the plunder of valuables of the Red Fort. Another text book Itihas Gaa Rahaa Hai which is for Class V, deals with the period of the freedom struggle against the British. The first chapter which is supposed to serve as a backgrounder discures the earlier phases of freedom struggle which had started in ancient times. After underscoring the fact that victories were secured against foreign invaders in ancient times, it talks of another set of invaders who arrived here with "the sword in one hand and the guran in the other" and goes on to add "Numberless Hindus were forcibly converted to Islam on the point of the sword. This struggle for freedom became a religious war. Numerous sacrifices were made in the name of religion. We went on winning one battle after another. We did not let the foreign rulers settle down to rule but we were not able to reconvert the separated brothers to Hinduism." Among the conspiracies that the British hatched to continue their rule, according to this book, was "an Organisation by the name of Congress" founded by an Englishman. Among the great personalities of modern times, mentioned by the book, were Dr. K. B. Hedgewar and Dr. M. S Golwalkar. The RSS is termed as an object of pride for the country. There is a great deal of emphasis on Indian (Hindu) unity and this can be done only under the auspices of the Sangh Parivar. One of the text books emphasies. "Lakhs of foreigners came during these thousands of years.... but they all suffered humiliating defeat..... There were some whom we digested ....when we were disunited, we failed to recognise who was our own and who were foreigners, then we were not able. to digest them. We were not able to digest even those who for some compulsion had separated from us. Mughals, Pathans and Christians are today some of these people." In April this year a workshop was held at Allahabad where the UP Education Minister declared "Whatever is very ancient for India, that precisely is most modern for the world." He went on to add, at another place, "with authority" that no country in the world till now had been able to achieve in science and mathematics what India had achieved in ancient times. The Uttar Pradesh govt. was compelled to announce the withdrawal of four school textbooks on the recommendation of the national steering committee, as various lesons in them were found to he objectionable. The national steering committee, after an evaluation, recommended the withdrawal of two history text books, and two mathematics textbooks prescribed for classes IX and X. This recommendation was based on the identification of material which was found to be objectionable in various lessons of these text books, the Deputy Minister of Union Govt. for education and culture, Ms, Sailja said, the UP Govt. has withdrwan the history books and excluded the history of vedic mathematics from the mathematics books. The four books found containing objectionable lessons were: High School Itihas (partone and two) and High School Ganit (Part one and two). to be continued..... |
