MASS ORGANISATIONS
There are a number of class and mass organisations which are either led by members of the Party or in which they work. In a major strategy for building the Party and the democratic movement, the cadres of the Party are active in scores of democratic organisations of workers, peasants, agricultural workers, youth, students, women, professionals, white-collar employees, cultural workers, etc. Some new organisations have also been established which are led by the Partys cadre.The total membership of the mass organisations which are led by the CPI(M) now stands at 36,924,141. This is still a small force in a country with 950 million. But it is a growing force.
CITU (Centre of Indian Trade Unions) Formed in 1970, the CITU has emerged as a major force in the trade union movement of the country representing big sections of workers. It is acting as a major pivot in uniting trade union movement of the country on the burning problems facing the working class. The CITU had a membership of 2,787,042 in 1997. AIKS (All India Kisan Sabha) The AIKS is one of the biggest organisations of the peasantry taking up vital concerns of the peasantry related to land struggles, agrarian relations, changes in agricultural methods and technology, market and prices, inputs, irrigation etc. The AIKS in 1996 had a membership of 14,449,063 AIAWU (All India Agricultural Workers Union) Formed in 1982, the AIAWU has been conceived as a militant organisation of agricultural workers, which acting in concert with the AIKS takes up the issues of land, wage and social justice. The AIAWU had a membership of 2,307,976 in the year 1997. AIDWA (All India Democratic Womens Association) Formed in 1981, the AIDWA has emerged as an important fighting voice of the Indian womens struggle for social emancipation. The Indian women, doubly oppressed as they are, both in economic and social terms have a vital stake in pushing ahead social reforms to secure equal status and the battle against socio-economic exploitation. The AIDWA has established itself as a catalyst for uniting other democratic womens organisations and groups to address these vital concerns. In 1997 the AIDWA had a membership of 4,905,330 DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) Formed in 1980, the growth of the DYFI has been impressive in the last decade, The DYFI has been engaged in a relentless battle for the right to work and for the all round development of youth. It has also emerged as a champion for the united movement of the young people.It had a registered a membership of 9,983,883 in the year 1996. SFI (Students Federation of India) Formed in 1970, the SFI has grown almost twenty-fold emerging as the biggest organisation of the democratic and patriotic minded students. The SFI takes up the burning issues of education and other vital concerns of the student community and launches struggles and united movements.It had a membership of 2,490,847 in the year 1997. |
